MAXIMUM OF SALARY RANGE: $107,614.00 per annum

AREA OF RESPONSIBILITY:
Under the general supervision and direction of Security Services management,
this role is responsible for the effective day to day supervision of all security guards employed by the City and the contract services provider. The Security Shift Lead will play a key role in the recruitment, coaching and discipline of staff. This role will be expected to develop, implement and monitor operational procedures, processes and standards to facilitate ongoing and effective security management practices while ensuring that all calls for service and complaints are attended to in a professional and timely manner, and that a record of such actions is accurately maintained. The role is also supportive of all proactive programs that have been implemented, consistent with a community-based service philosophy. The role will also manage the activities of security guards to ensure the timely and effective achievement of departmental goals and objectives, within prescribed policies, procedures and standard business practices.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. SUPERVISION
- Supervises a team of in-house Security Guards and contracted Security Guards.
- Supervise ad-hoc guard coverage and all security activities occurring on a particular shift.
- Ensures all daily operations of the security team and directs all work, assignments, breaks and tasks.
- Ensures daily work, projects, and reports are completed and submitted in a timely fashion.
- Ensures adequate coverage of security personnel. Assists with filling shifts open due to book offs and vacations.
- Provides supervision at meetings and events, providing directions to other guards and City staff including events personnel, caretakers or building operators.
- Issues memos and updates logs, binders and databases.
- Provides training and orientation to new Security Guards.
- Conducts pre-duty meetings, post-incident and post-shift briefings.
- Ensures contract guards assigned to work at the City meet the mandatory skill set required to work at the assigned location.
- Ensures guards are in possession of their required licenses and certifications and are following deportment requirements.
- Inspects guard posts as scheduled and meets with subordinates to outlines tasks and responsibilities.
- Monitors and strictly controls the quality of service of the activities under his/her supervision.
- May counsel, provide inputs and recommend performance actions, as appropriate; seeks advice from the Security Operations Supervisor or designated representatives as appropriate; meets with employees and documents counselling and disciplinary actions.
- Escalates issues and/or violations to the Supervisor,
Security Services.
2. RELATIONSHIP AND COMMUNICATION
- Maintains good relationships with the representatives of the various City stakeholders including property management, City Council, Community Services, Library management and emergency services. Follows up on any issues that may arise at City properties.
- Responds to public inquiries and represents the City of Brampton Security Services Section by promoting security services that contribute positively to the results of the division and corporate vision.
- Communicates and coordinates scheduling, staffing, equipment, record keeping, and related matters, to ensure consistent delivery of services.
- Communicates and coordinates with event staff and organizers ensuring the safety of staff,
attendees and participants.
- Communicates clearly, efficiently and professionally to staff, management and emergency responders during high stress incidents.
- Conducts security audits and assessments providing advice to enhance physical security.
- Informs designated authorities in the event of security, fire or health emergencies.
- Informs and warns violators of rule infractions, such as loitering, smoking, or carrying forbidden articles.
- Fosters effective working relationships with internal departments and external agencies including, but not limited to Enforcement and By-Law Services, Recreation, Transit, Brampton Library, Downtown Brampton Business Improvement Association and security management of the Peel District School Board,
Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board and the Region of Peel.
- Promotes effective working relationships with law enforcement and other emergency services personnel (i.e., Peel Regional Police, Brampton Fire and Emergency Services, Peel Regional Paramedic Services etc.) when dealing with routine and emergency situations.
3. COLLECT AND RECORD INFORMATION
- Collects and records information relevant to security issues in accordance with City of Brampton policies and procedures.
- Takes comprehensive statements and notes that contain all details relevant to the incident being responded to.
- Completes security incident and investigative reports in a timely manner.
- Plans, leads, assists, or conducts investigations including those related to City employees,
including interviewing, proper collection of evidence and presenting summaries of findings.
- Assists guards in the completion of incident reports and approve as required.
- Maintains appropriate security and confidentiality of information created or encountered while performing assigned duties.
4. ADMINISTRATION
- • Reviews reports and notebooks completed by guards to ensure accuracy and timely completion.
• Reviews, edits, approves and disseminates security incident reports.
• Follows up on requests for additional security guards and ad-hoc services.
• Supports, trains, evaluates, assesses and analyzes the performance of the security team.
• Provides the necessary information to the security team to enable them to carry out their duties in accordance with the instructions of the Security Operations Supervisor, Coordinator and/or any other facility management representatives.
• Monitors, reviews, and makes recommendations for all policies and procedures, ensuring that operational requirements are being met and enhanced.
• Inspects and keeps an inventory of the systems and equipment under his or her supervision, ensuring that they are in good working order.
• Provides administrative support to ensure efficient security operations.
• Collect and record information relevant to security issues in accordance with City of Brampton policies (Human Rights, Confidentiality, etc.) and procedures.
• Prepare, review, distribute and file daily memos, staff records, correspondence and other pertinent communications.
5. EMERGENCY AND CRITICAL INCIDENT RESPONSE
- • Ensures an appropriate number of security personnel are dispatched to all emergency situations.
• Ensures security guards respond to situations in accordance with City policies and procedures.
• Provides direction to security guards for appropriate action during an emergency.
• Assists emergency services (Police, Fire, Ambulance etc.), as required.
• Responds to calls for service and security-related incidents as required, and conduct other operational duties as assigned.
• Attends the scene to assume Incident Commander Role until the scene can be handed over to emergency services personnel
SELECTION CRITERIA:
EDUCATION:
- Post-secondary education in Law and Security, Police Foundations or the approved equivalent combination of education and experience.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum five (5) years’ full-time security experience in a government, commercial or health care environment or with a law enforcement agency.
- A minimum of two years of supervisory experience.
OTHER SKILLS AND ASSETS:
- Knowledge and understanding of applicable federal, provincial, and municipal legislation and regulations in Security and Life Safety management.
- Thorough understanding of legal authorities related to arrest, search and seizure.
- Strong leadership and communication skills with a proven ability to build relationships.
- Strong coaching, mentoring and staff development skills.
- Strong analytical skills necessary to resolve problems and look for solutions.
- Experienced in proper investigation procedures to ensure that incidents are properly handled and documented.
- In-depth knowledge of Security and Life Safety technology (i.e. CCTV, Access Control, Fire Alarm, Intrusion) and other security-related systems
- Working knowledge of site security and life safety needs and industry-related techniques, technology and trends
- Strong organizational, prioritization and time management skills
- Ability to delegate effectively and be flexible and adaptable when dealing with a diversity of people and situations.
- Digital literacy in Word and Google Suite
- Highly developed interpersonal and customer service skills including conflict resolution, problem solving, decision making and situational awareness.
- Highly developed written and verbal communication skills with the ability to be confident, clear, respectful and sensitive
- Ability to work up to twelve (12) hour shift schedules in order to meet the operational need of the branch.
- Ability to work rotating shifts including days, evenings and nights (including weekends and statutory holidays).
