Position Summary:
Reporting directly to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Associate Vice President (AVP) for Faculty Affairs is responsible for all academic personnel functions. The AVP serves as a member of the Provost's administrative team to provide leadership for initiatives within the division of Academic Affairs, with a full understanding of the mission of the university and the role of Faculty Affairs within that mission.
Key Responsibilities:
Responsible for all academic personnel matters and for building relationships with and among the faculty and campus community.
Implements, interprets, and ensures compliance with,
the Unit 3 (CFA) and Unit 11 (UAW) Collective Bargaining Agreements.
Provides oversight responsibility for all personnel processes related to academic employees (instructional faculty, librarians, coaches, academic related counselors, and academic-administrators).
Oversees personnel processes and procedures for faculty unit employees, including, but not limited to: appointment, paid and unpaid leaves, outside employment, and faculty retirement programs.
Provides expert advice on contract and faculty personnel matters to the President, the Provost, deans, associate deans, and department chairs.
Conducts, plans, and/or supervises training related to recruitment policies and practices, probationary plans, retention, tenure,
and promotion processes and policies.
Coordinates and supervises all academic personnel related procedures, and provides policy interpretations to department chairs, committees, academic deans, and the Provost.
Serves as the Level 1 hearing officer for grievances, and serves as the employer representative in arbitration hearings.
Oversees policies and procedures related to faculty reappointment, promotion, and tenure.
Administers the collective bargaining agreement for all faculty and Academic Student Employees.
Monitors the faculty professional leave process, including disseminating information and advising faculty on eligibility for sabbaticals.
On behalf of the Provost,
works with academic deans to determine appropriate faculty staffing patterns.
Facilitates faculty searches and appointments.
Oversees procedures for the student course evaluation process.
Works closely with the Title IX Coordinator in responding to complaints of discrimination, harassment, retaliation, and unprofessional conduct.
Works closely with the Human Resources Officer on faculty personnel matters.
Supervises Academic Personnel Services staff.
Participates in Faculty Governance as it relates to faculty personnel policies.
Provides budget planning and model development.
Coordinates other projects as assigned by the Provost.
Supervises maintenance of academic personnel records.
Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Associated with this Position Include:
Demonstrated commitment to diversity, inclusion, and racial equity.
Knowledge in the broad spectrum of activities that relate to faculty personnel processes.
Knowledge and experience in faculty development and department chair leadership.
Demonstrated ability to work and communicate effectively in a diverse campus community.
Ability to successfully provide leadership and function effectively on the Provost’s leadership team.
Minimum Qualifications:
Appropriate terminal degree, with successful university teaching experience, service, and a record of scholarly/creative activity suitable for a tenured professor faculty appointment.
At least three years of successful administrative experience and ethical leadership at or above the level of department chair.
Preferred Qualifications:
Successful administrative experience at the college and/or university level.
Demonstrated ability to successfully recruit and mentor faculty.
Experience in academic personnel administration, policies, and procedures in a collective bargaining environment.
