As the Geotechnical Engineer, you will perform project coordination and management and provide geotechnical support to a wide variety of interested parties. Working in the Bridges and Geotechnics Division and reporting to the Leader of Geotechnical Engineering, you will have the opportunity to work on complex projects and initiatives that shape our city. Primary duties include:
- Manage consultants and contractors who monitor existing geotechnically challenging City sites to ensure projects, reviews, and results are delivered on schedule, on budget, to developed success criteria, and in alignment with Division and Business Unit expectations.
- Review external geotechnical reports and design submissions provided to The City and provide review comments back to external report / design authors; follow up on review comments to ensure they are closed out to the satisfaction of The City.
- Assist with procurement activities for geotechnical consultants and contractors.
- Assist in coordinating, collaborating, communicating, and negotiating with a variety of Divisions, Business Units, Councilors, interest groups, and the public; build strategic partnerships and collaborative environments that facilitate sound and timely decision-making.
- Utilize geotechnical engineering knowledge and judgment to make sound decisions and solve problems.
- Implement The City's Geotechnical Policies, Framework, and Guidelines.
- Complete select geotechnical engineering designs in-house from feasibility stage through to construction stage slopes, embankments, fills, retaining walls, slope stabilization, piles, etc.,
working with structural engineers on coordinated solutions (soil-structure interaction).
- Assist in coordinating emergency response activities for geotechnically challenging sites as required, being on regular rotation for The City's slope emergency response callout list, including some after-hours work.
- Assist the City's geotechnical engineering team in making timely and sound decisions on issues of public safety.
- Take engineering responsibility for slope stability technician site inspections and retrofit options analysis phases.
- Assist with City geotechnical asset management.
Qualifications
- A degree in Civil Engineering and at least 4 years of relevant professional engineering experience obtained after receiving your P. Eng.
designation and a current licensure as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) complete with practicing status OR licensure and practicing status by the first day of work. Click here for more details .
- Experience must include geotechnical maintenance, construction, and design.
- Working knowledge of the following is required:
- Geotechnical design software for slopes, piles, and retaining walls.
- Current industry geotechnical codes, standards, guidelines, and practices.
- Experience with geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring devices, geotechnical site construction monitoring activities and contract administration roles, interpreting field and laboratory data, and reviewing geotechnical engineering reports for Quality Assurance are required.
- A master's or a doctorate degree in Geotechnical Engineering will be considered an asset.
- Applied knowledge of project management principles in either a government or consulting environment will be considered an asset.
- Applied knowledge of hydrogeological principles would be considered as asset.
- Success in this position requires: strong analytical, communication, and presentation skills; the ability to balance technical requirements with nontechnical competing priorities; and a desire to build a great city for everyone.
