The University of Toronto Libraries system is the largest academic library in Canada and is consistently ranked in the top ten among academic research libraries in North America. The system consists of 40 libraries located on three university campuses: St. George, Mississauga, and Scarborough. This array of college libraries, special collections, and specialized libraries and information centres supports the teaching and research requirements of over 300 graduate programs, more than 70 professional programs, and about 700 undergraduate degree programs. In addition to more than 12 million volumes in 341 languages, the library system currently provides access to millions of electronic resources in various forms and over 31,000 linear metres of archival material. More than 150,000 new print volumes are acquired each year. The Libraries' data centre houses more than 600 servers with a storage capacity of 1.5 petabytes.

About University College:

University College is the founding college of the University of Toronto, built in 1856. From the beginning,





it has welcomed students of all religious backgrounds and cultivated an ethos of mutual respect where diversity is championed. The college has over 5500 undergraduate students, three residences, over 80 faculty members in diverse fields of study, and over 100 staff members. Three interdisciplinary programs are contained within the college: Canadian Studies, Cognitive Science and Health Studies (Public Health); as well as seminar courses called UC One: Engaging Toronto, which enables first year students to apply their learning to the city around them. The College is also affiliated with the Centre for Drama, Theatre and Performance Studies, as well as the Mark S. Bonham Centre for Sexual Diversity Studies. The Opportunity:

University College is hiring a librarian who will be responsible for both the daily operations of the library, as well as collaborative engagement with University College leadership, faculty and staff to plan for the future of the Library, ensuring it meets both current and emerging academic and research needs of undergraduate students and faculty in University College programs of study The University College Librarian will collaborate with library colleagues across the system on various committees, projects, services and initiatives.





They will be responsible for ensuring that the University College community is fully apprised of the myriad service offerings and collections provided to all University of Toronto students and faculty through the University of Toronto Libraries.

Responsibilities:

- As a solo librarian, manages all operations of the library including library budgets, public service, research and teaching support, website creation and maintenance of the physical space.

- Identifies priorities and develops services that support the current and emerging needs of administration, faculty, researchers and students.

- Proactively engages with faculty, staff and students to enhance awareness about library resources and services.

- Supports faculty with their digital scholarship, as well as research data management (RDM) and open access requirements,





as mandated by funding agencies and open education initiatives

- Serves as liaison to the University College One Seminar courses and University College Programs: Cognitive Science, Health Studies (Public Health) and Canadian Studies, in collaboration with liaison librarians from related areas.

- Provides support to faculty and students on the effective and ethical use of AI tools in the context of research.

- Partners with faculty to develop and deliver curriculum-embedded instruction and tutorials.

- In collaboration with colleagues across UTL, builds, maintains and assesses library collections, ensuring that library resources meet the evolving, increasingly digital scholarly needs of the College’s students and faculty.

- Actively participates in relevant College,





library and campus-wide committees or working groups.

- Hires, trains and supervises student casual employees.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

- A degree from an accredited Master’s level program in library and information studies.

- Demonstrated commitment to the values of inclusivity, diversity, equity, anti-racism and accessibility.

- Proven experience providing research and academic support to students and faculty.

- Demonstrated experience building collections and conducting collection assessment projects in an increasingly electronic and online environment.

- Demonstrated administrative, managerial and project management experience. Proven ability to lead and to manage in a unionized environment.







- Proven experience providing library instruction, both online and in-person; demonstrated knowledge of effective pedagogical approaches and tools.

- A flexible, creative and user-centered approach to public service; demonstrated capacity to rethink/reimagine workflows and library practices to best meet the needs of students and faculty.

- Capacity to thrive in an environment of ongoing change and ambiguity, and to nurture that capacity in others.

- Excellent interpersonal, intercultural communication skills; a strong ability to collaborate and work effectively in both a team-based and self-directed environment.

- Demonstrated understanding of the evolving scholarly communications environment and open access initiatives.







- Awareness of emerging technologies to support digital research and demonstrated understanding of the role of libraries in collecting and preserving non-traditional scholarship for future generations.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

- Knowledge and experience in one or more of the areas of specialization in the college programs: Canadian Studies, Health Studies (Public Heath), Cognitive Science.

- Familiarity with digital scholarship and/or digital humanities.

- Experience developing and managing web content.

Salary and Terms of Appointment:

It is anticipated that this position will be filled at the Librarian II or III level, subject to review and experience. Minimum salary: LIB II: $79,720; LIB III: $102,023; (Salary is dependent on rank at hire and qualifications). This is a permanent status stream appointment.
