The Occupational

Health & Safety (OHS) Specialist works closely with the Manager, Safety& Emergency Management to meet the VFPA's occupational health and safetycommitment, objectives and responsibilities through the development andmaintenance of the Occupational Health and Safety Program, Hazard Prevention

Program, Contractor Safety Management Program, and incident management.

The OHSSpecialist provides support and advice to staff in relation to health andsafety requirements and best practice.

Additionally, the OHS Specialist develops requirements for, maintainsand provides training for users of all IS systems that support the health andsafety program, such as the safety management technology system and third-partycontractor system.

What you do: Coordinate health and safety programs,including the oversight of the hazard prevention program, risk assessments,risk mitigation activities,





training and education, program. enhancements andrelated updates
Facilitate and support the annualdepartmental safety plans, with a focus on leading indicator activities,meeting facilitation and activity tracking
Maintenance of the hazard prevention program,including review with all departments on a regularly scheduled cycle forcompliance
Provide consultation or advice on allelements of the safety program such as ergonomics, working at heights, confinedspace, hazardous materials such as asbestos etc., including maintenance of theprogram documents, safe work procedures and guidelines






Facilitate and support the implementation ofa coordinated health and safety education and training program that may includeprovision of in-house training or developing in conjunction with third-partyconsultants training materials and hazard prevention program
Liaise with and report to federal health andsafety regulators such as Employment and Social Development Canada
Develop, implement and coordinate thecontractor safety management program with a focus on best practices andrecognized methodologies
Responsible for the life cycle safety focuson project that include pre-qualification requirements and evaluation, projectoversight such as site inspections, proactive reporting, relevant performancemetrics and post project contractor performance evaluation
Provide subject matter expertise and evaluatesafety documents submitted by proponents for projects (tenders, RFQ's, RFP's,etc)






Act as a superuser and subject matter expertin administering the safety management technology system to ensure appropriateworkflows, reporting, documentation management, incident management, riskregistry and action tracking activities are maintained
Lead the ongoing maintenance and systemimprovement that may include making provide some technical support to staff,on-going dashboard development and reporting enhancements
Coordinate and conduct accident and incidentinvestigations, including ensuring appropriate documentation is complete,submitted and action items are implemented in a timely manner
Ensure all regulatory paperwork is submittedin a timely and accurate manner; includes incident reports and annual reportingrequirements






Identify workable solutions or correctiveactions to try and prevent future incident occurrences and work with leaders toensure identified actions are tracked to completion
Assist with planning and coordination ofvarious departmental and stakeholder emergency drills and exercises
What youbring: Two year full-time diploma in occupationalhealth and safety or another acceptable discipline from a recognizededucational institution
Minimum of 4 years of occupational health andsafety experience, including:
conducting formal risk identification,assessment and control elements, and implementation of a hazard preventionprogram
practical experience in addressing safetyissues and concerns
contractor safety management programimplementation or coordination






implementing and maintaining safetytechnology systems
conducting training and providingpresentations to large number of cross-functional groups
General occupational health and safetyknowledge including working knowledge of the Canada Labour Code and Work

SafeBCActs and regulations are required
Proficiency in Word suite, and Sharepoint orsimilar, is required
Possession of or working towards a CRSP(Canadian Registered Safety Professional) certification or equivalent isconsidered an asset
Formal project management experience isconsidered an asset
Ability to work effectively with internal andexternal stakeholders
High level of trust and confidentiality
Ability to multi-task, meet deadlines andpro-actively address shifting priorities
