Full job description
Position Title: Filmmaker
Organization: Brandon University’s Centre for Applied Research and Education in Indigenous, Rural, and Remote Settings (BU CARES)
Location: Brandon, Manitoba, Canada
Overview:
Brandon University’s CARES is seeking an independent filmmaker to join our team for an impactful project focused on anti-racism. The project is the continuation of an ongoing initiative, which has already produced four films addressing various aspects of racism and its effects. The fifth film in this series will explore the negative consequences of neutrality in the face of racism or experiences of those perceived as white-passing navigating racism.
We are looking for a filmmaker who is passionate about social justice, particularly in Indigenous and racialized contexts, and can bring these complex stories to life through film.
Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with the research and scriptwriting teams to conceptualize, plan, and direct the film based on existing data and community feedback.
- Manage all stages of film production, including pre-production, filming, and post-production, ensuring the project remains on schedule and within budget.
- Work with a diverse cast and crew to accurately and sensitively represent the experiences of marginalized communities.
- Oversee cinematography, sound design, music, and editing to ensure high-quality production and distribution-ready films.
- Incorporate feedback from community focus groups, project leaders, and researchers to refine and finalize the film.
- Maintain ethical standards in storytelling and ensure the film aligns with the values of anti-racism, inclusivity, and cultural sensitivity.
Qualifications:
- 3+ years of experience as a professional filmmaker, director, or producer with demonstrated expertise in film projects focused on social justice or marginalized communities.
- Proven ability to create films that address complex social issues such as racism, colonialism, or racial identity.
- Experience in collaborative filmmaking, particularly with Indigenous, racialized, or religious minority communities.
- Strong project management skills, including budgeting, scheduling, and team coordination.
- A network of film production and post-production professionals to collaborate with, as needed.
- Technical proficiency in all aspects of video production, including cinematography, sound, music, color grading, and delivery on multiple platforms.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work in a collaborative, team-oriented environment.
- Passion for exploring new ways to visually and creatively represent marginalized experiences.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Lived experience or deep connection to the themes being explored in the film, such as the effects of neutrality in the face of racism or white-passing experiences.
- Experience with community-based or participatory filmmaking approaches.
About the Project:
This film is part of an ongoing Anti-Racism Action Plan developed with funding from Canada Heritage. Previous stages of the project involved a provincial survey and focus groups, which informed the development of four films. This fifth film will similarly be short (5-7 minutes)
and based on fictional storytelling, addressing specific, nuanced racial issues that emerged from community consultations and data analysis.
Compensation to be negotiated.
