Graduate Teaching Assistants, Department of Mechanical Engineering
The Department of Mechanical Engineering invites applications for up to five Graduate Teaching Assistant positions for the Mechanical Engineering portion of GE 112 Engineering Discipline Experience.
GE 112 is a week-long, laboratory-based course taken by all first-year undergraduate students in the College of Engineering. Teaching Assistants are required to supervise the laboratory activities and to assist students with the calculations required to process their raw data. All laboratory activities take place during the week of December 12-18, 2024. TA training will occur during the week of December 2 -12, 2024.
The laboratory activities will include wind tunnel testing of a model horizontal axis wind turbine (HAWT), numerical modelling of HAWT performance, testing material properties in a simple cantilever beam experiment, and measuring strains on a HAWT blade with strain gauges.
Start Date: December 2, 2024
End Date: December 18, 2024
Rate of Pay: $22.12 per hour
Required Number of Hours: 18-30 hours, depending on the position (five positions total)
Duration of Employment: Two weeks
Duties
The Graduate Teaching Assistant reports directly to the Instructor(s) responsible for the course. Specific duties will be assigned by the Instructor(s) and may include one or more of the following:
- Demonstrating and/or assisting with the demonstration of laboratories;
- Monitoring safety in the laboratory in cooperation with the Instructor(s);
- Assisting undergraduate students with the task of processing their experimental data;
- Other duties related to the course deemed appropriate by the Instructor(s).
Skills and Abilities
Minimum qualifications:
- Graduate student in good standing at the University of Saskatchewan
- Demonstrated experience (e.g., undergraduate or graduate coursework, research or industrial experience, experience with specific software packages) that is relevant to the specific class or laboratory
- Good English language oral and written communication skills
- Completion of the University of Saskatchewan online Laboratory Safety and WHMIS training courses
Ideal qualifications:
- MSc or PhD student in good standing in Mechanical Engineering with an undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering
- Excellent English language oral and written communication skills
- Previous experience as an instructor or teaching assistant
- Familiarity with specific equipment used in the laboratory (if applicable)
