Through a new, innovative partnership with Nova Scotia Health (NSH), we are opening the first transitional care center in our province, in West Bedford. Shannex is the operating partner for the transitional care centre on behalf of Nova Scotia Health. You will have an opportunity to work in a facility with a purpose and design dedicated to providing care to NSH patients in central zone,
who no longer require hospital care, but need services before they can safely return to their home and community.
We are searching for a Recreation Therapist to join our new Transitional Care Centre team based in Bedford, Nova Scotia.
The Recreation Therapist plans, implements, and evaluates therapeutic recreation programs in the facility with an emphasis on interventions directed towards patient needs and their spiritual, cultural, moral and ethical values, and life style preferences.
The transitional care model supports NSH patients/families who require additional time, services, and support to transition back to home/community, by providing an alternate space with intentional programming, building design, and resource allocation to increase the probability of returning to their previous living situation.

Key Duties & Responsibilities Include:
- Plans, implements, and evaluates a comprehensive therapeutic recreation program plan focusing on physical, social, cultural, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual needs of the clients.
- Using a variety of interview and observational techniques obtains all necessary information related to the therapeutic recreation assessment; addresses all recreation therapy referrals from the interdisciplinary team.
- Develops individual treatment plans with clients/Substitute Decision Makers based on assessment results, applying facilitation techniques to assist clients in achieving identified goals.
- Implements therapeutic recreation programs in a variety of settings, including small groups and one-to-one.
- Participates in the ongoing evaluation of all therapeutic recreation interventions.
- Assists in the training, supervision, and evaluation of volunteers and student placements.
- Collaborates with client and family to meet their program expectations and needs.
- Demonstrates effective communication strategies and skills when relating to clients, family, and team members.
- Demonstrates respect for the client ‘s needs and their spiritual, cultural, moral and ethical values, and life style preferences.
Requirements Include:
You will be service minded, results oriented, and positive towards change and innovation. You will be a team player who works collaboratively to deliver results and also have the ability to work autonomously. In addition, the selected candidate will have:
- Undergraduate degree in Therapeutic Recreation with certification in the field of Therapeutic Recreation
- Certified or eligible to be certified as a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist through the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification
- Member of the Atlantic Canadian Society for Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists
- Basics Food Safety Training/ Food Handlers Course
- Valid CPR and First Aid certification
- Class 4 Driver’s License required if clients are being transported by facility vehicle
- Minimum of one-year combined experience in the delivery of recreation in health care
Asset: Previous experience working in long term care or with seniors
