The Program Assistant, Sports & Adventure is responsible for assisting with the Appleby Summer Camp Sports & Adventure programs. This position involves supporting the program through setting up activities/equipment and assisting with instructing activities for campers. WHAT IS AMAZING ABOUT THIS JOB:
- Assist the Sports & Adventure Program Director and Head Instructors with the Sports Camp programs
- Assist with proper inventory count for Sports camp equipment
- Support all Sports & Adventure camps as needed and instruct any sports camp, with limited notice if an instructor is absent
- Assist Head Instructors in activities within each camp category, ensuring children are engaged throughout their camp experience
- Ensure compliance to Appleby’s sports camp procedures and protocols
- Assist with co-hosting cross-camp activities & tournaments for the Sports & Adventure campers
- Aid in safe drop-off and pick-up for all Sports & Adventure campers, with an active presence at these points, getting to know parents, helping and answering questions
- Assist in ensuring that lunches run smoothly and assist with clean up and camper traffic flow in the dining hall
- Ensure safety of sports campers and staff in the pool area when lifeguard or additional support is needed
- Follow Appleby camps’ pool procedures while in pool area, support the assessments of Campers’ swimming ability by using a swim assessment under the direction of the Head Lifeguard
YOU WILL BE A GREAT FIT IF YOU:
- Have completed second year post-secondary education and have thorough knowledge & previous experience instructing Sport and/or Adventure programs.
- Possess strong athletic & coaching skills
- Are organized and are able to host/direct activities in front of large groups
- Have experience in arranging a variety of sports camps, sports competitions, morning warm-ups
- Have related work experience in teaching in various sports, canoeing,
rock climbing in camp or educational environments
- Lead and have proven experience in a similar a sports camp/recreation program setting
- Can demonstrate ability to mentor fellow staff to work effectively with youth in a camp setting
- Have valid Standard First Aid and CPR – C
- Possess a valid driver’s license is an asset
- Have knowledge of (or have the ability to achieve) certification in all or some of the following
- Canoeing: ORCKA certifications and/or Paddle Canada certifications in basic Canoeing/flat-water is an asset
- High & low ropes facilitation/training & climbing experience is an asset
- Bronze Cross and/or Lifeguarding certification is an asset
- Current Boat License (Pleasure Craft Operator) is an asset

WORK SCHEDULE*
- Training & Pre-Camp
- Friday May 30, 2025-Evening
- Saturday May 31 and Sun June 1, 2025-Full Day
- Saturday June 14, 2025-Full Day
- Sunday June 15, 2025- Full Day
- Camp Session Dates & Hours
- Camp Work: as assigned Monday June 23 to Friday Aug 29 (excluding June 30 and holidays)
- Monday to Friday 8:15am to 4:15pm
- Mandatory Orientation Meeting First day of each Week 7:30-8:15am
