The Head Lifeguard for the Appleby Camp is responsible for overseeing activities in the pool areas to prevent accidents and provide a safe environment to campers. The Head Guard is also responsible for providing leadership & training to the lifeguard team as well as assisting in making the weekly program schedule for the pool and lifeguards.
WHAT IS AMAZING ABOUT THIS JOB:
- Supervise the pool area including staff team of 3 – 5 lifeguards and recreational camp swim program
- Organize, plan, and coordinate all aspects of program area that can be done prior to summer including purchasing first aid supplies, lifeguard training, camp set up, cross-camp pool scheduling and sub-committee work
- Ensure the safety and health of campers and staff while at the pool area
- Follow Appleby’s Camp Lifeguarding procedures to provide a safe environment while exceeding customer service expectations
- Communicate regularly with the swimming staff to ensure awareness of any physical, psychological, emotional and/or medical limitations of campers and/or staff that could affect their safety in the water
- Provide regular review and practice of the emergency procedures on site by all staff both during pre-camp before the swim program begins and during the summer season
- Perform regular assessments and classifications of the swimming ability
- Assist in maintaining daily records and inspections of the pool facilities
- Check the pool areas and all required safety equipment on a daily basis
- Conduct swim breaks and enforce pool/Appleby policies
YOU WILL BE A GREAT FIT IF YOU:
- Have pool deck supervisory experience
- Current Lifesaving Society Swim Instructors and Lifesaving Society Lifesaving Instructors qualifications
- Current National Lifeguard Service (NL)
- Have valid Standard First Aid Training and CPR- C or higher required
- Aquatic Supervisory Training (AST) or aquatic qualifications an asset (Pool Operator, Aquatic Safety inspector, NL Instructor, Lifesaving instructor, swim instructor, instructor trainer) or Airway Management certification would be considered as an asset
- Experience logging detailed incident/accident reports
- Have strong multi-tasking and problem-solving abilities in a fast-paced environment
- Proven inclusive programming
- Are energetic and enthusiastic
- Possess life-guarding experience within a camp and pool setting is preferred
- Acquired knowledge of computer software programs including Microsoft Office Suite, and Camp Brain

WORK SCHEDULE
- Training & Pre-Camp
- Monthly Meetings and Planning Time – Times determined by group consensus.
- Friday May 30, 2025-Evening
- Saturday May 31 and Sun June 1, 2025-Full Day
- Saturday June 14, 2025-Full Day
- Sunday June 15, 2025- Full Day
- Camp Session Dates & Hours
- Camp Work: as assigned Monday June 23 to Friday Aug 29 (excluding June 30 and holidays)
- Monday to Friday 8:15am to 4:15pm
- Mandatory Orientation Meeting First day of each Week 7:30-8:15am
