The Program Assistant, Early Discovery is responsible for assisting with the Appleby Summer Camp Early Discovery programs. This position involves supporting the program through setting up activities/equipment and assisting with instructing activities for campers ages 4 – 7 years. WHAT IS AMAZING ABOUT THIS JOB:
- Assist the Program Director and the Head Instructors for the Early Discovery camps by providing support to all the programs as requested (ages 4 - 7 years)
- Assist with proper inventory count for Discovery camp equipment
- Be prepared to float between camps, and instruct any Discovery camp (Nature & Science Discovery, Arts Discovery, Weekly Special and Camp & Sports Discovery programs), including assisting with supervision in the pool, with limited notice if an instructor is absent
- Assist the Head Instructors in activities within each camp category, ensuring children are engaged through their camp experience
- Assist with co-hosting cross-camp activities, shows & tournaments for the Discovery campers
- Ensure compliance to Appleby’s Discovery camp procedures and protocols
- Aid in safe drop-off and pick-up for all Discovery campers with an active presence at these points, getting to know parents,
helping and answering questions
- Assist in ensuring that lunches run smoothly and assist with clean up and camper traffic flow in the dining hall
- Set up weekly theme decorations and assist in preparing activities for Nature & Science Discovery, Arts Discovery and Camp & Sports Discovery programs
- Ensure safety of discovery campers and staff in the pool area when a Lifeguard or additional support is needed
- Follow Appleby Camps’ pool procedures while in the pool area, support the assessments of Discovery Campers’ swimming ability by using a swim assessment under the direction of the Head Lifeguard
YOU WILL BE A GREAT FIT IF YOU:
- Have completed second year post-secondary education and have thorough knowledge & previous experience instructing children aged 4 – 7 years
- Possess related work experience in Early Childhood Education, Pre-school, School age camps or educational environments
- Can demonstrate strong organizational capabilities and be able to host/direct activities in front of large groups
- Enjoy leadership roles and have experience in a similar camp/recreation program setting
- Proven ability to mentor fellow staff to work effectively with children and youth in a camp setting
- Have valid Standard First Aid and CPR – C or higher
- Have knowledge of (or have the ability to achieve) certification in Bronze Cross and/or Lifeguarding certification is an asset
- A valid driver’s license is an asset

- Training & Pre-Camp
- Friday May 30, 2025-Evening
- Saturday May 31 and Sun June 1, 2025-Full Day
- Saturday June 14, 2025-Full Day
- Sunday June 15, 2025- Full Day
- Camp Session Dates & Hours
- Camp Work: as assigned Monday June 23 to Friday Aug 29 (excluding June 30 and holidays)
- Monday to Friday 8:15am to 4:15pm
- Mandatory Orientation Meeting First day of each Week 7:30am to 8:15am
