Our Recreation and Culture services strive to enhance the quality of life of Oakville residents by promoting healthy,
active living through a wide range of recreation and culture experiences for all ages and abilities. We are committed to providing high quality and relevant programs, services and facilities that enable lifelong learning, physical literacy and social interactions, helping foster a sense of belonging for individuals, families and communities.
Reporting to the Commissioner of Community Services, the Director leads the department setting strategic direction in the development, implementation, evaluation and continuous improvement of a diverse portfolio of recreation and culture services and programs in alignment with corporate goals, priorities and action plans. With approximately 300 staff (73 full-time and over 200 part-time staff) and a $46.5M budget, the Director ensures the efficient and effective delivery of services within a growing community. Current facilities include 7 multi-use community and cultural centres, satellite arenas and pools (indoor and outdoor), a Performing Arts Centre and a Museum.
The town’s facilities enable community access and provide programming in special events, arts and culture, community development, recreational sports, social, aquatics, fitness, camps, and heritage services for all ages.
Through community engagement and partnerships, the Director oversees a program delivery model that meets community needs and is financially sustainable based on rates and fees, operating and capital reserve budgets. Focused on community development and trends, the Director encourages partnerships as an alternative form of service delivery.
As an accomplished leader, you will have pursued studies in Recreation & Leisure, Recreation & Sport Business, Business Administration,
Arts & Culture or a related program and have progressively taken on senior positions leading recreation and culture programming preferably within a public sector, unionized environment. Your commitment to inclusion, diversity, equity and accessibility in programming, outstanding service delivery excellence and understanding of metrics and data/trend analysis set you apart. You have overseen multi-million-dollar budgets, generated revenue, and been involved in facility management. You are a community builder and passionate about engaging and learning from continuous feedback. With exceptional relationship building, leadership, strategic thinking, analytical, resource stewardship, judgement and management skills, you are well-equipped to take on this important role.
