The City is seeking a dynamic and experienced Corporate Communications Manager to join our team to lead crisis communications, as well as our approach to media relations, issues management and other corporate initiatives

The Manager plays a pivotal role in supporting the organization through operational and reputational challenge and has the opportunity to work on strategies that have meaningful impact on Edmontonians and individuals surrounding communities during emergencies.

The Manager stays up-to-date on the evolving landscape of corporate and crisis communications to maintain relevant and modern strategies and ensures staff are well trained and prepared to delivery high quality communications service.







This individual is familiar with working in a government environment and understands the legal and reputational obligations of governments to identify an emerging crisis, protect people and property, manage complex risks, restore public services and build corporate reputation. The Manager position requires strategic thinking with a proven track record in crisis communications, issues management and media relations.

What will you do?

- Lead the maintenance and implementation of the Corporate Crisis Communications Plan.
- Provide leadership to the Crisis Communications team, responding to crises effectively and ensuring staff preparedness to deliver timely and accurate communication.
- Prepare and support senior leadership in their response to corporate issues and crisis situations.
- Provide expertise on emerging trends and best practices in crisis communications and media relations
- Cultivate and maintain relationships with media including the delivery of the After hours Media Management program,





media interview and spokesperson training
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to assess risks and develop communication strategies for ad hoc or emergent issues
- Provide performance coaching, management, training and career development support

Qualifications:

- Knowledge, training and/or education in Communications, Crisis or Emergency Management, Journalism, or related discipline.
- Incident Command System (ICS) minimum of ICS 200 before start preferred but required within three months of hire; ICS 300 required within one year of hire
- Significant communications experience relating to issues and crisis management, including experience in a leadership or management role within a large, complex organization






- Previous leadership or management experience of direct supervision of staff through a performance cycle
- Direct, previous experience in leading the communications response within a large and complex organization during a crisis involving a natural disaster/climate event, public safety and/or social disorder
- Significant media relations experience with demonstrated ability to act as spokesperson or train/advise senior level staff

Skills required for success?

- Leadership or management level experience in crisis communications response, issues management, strategic consulting
- Ability and aptitude in environmental scanning, political acumen and strong strategic sense in real-time problem solving to respond to media pressures and demands
- Ability to effectively interact,





communicate, influence and collaborate with a variety of partners and stakeholders including executive and senior leadership, staff at all levels.
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills, including the ability to confidently provide advice to executive leaders, while also leading and managing people effectively during emotional and stressful circumstances; demonstrated commitment to a respectful and inclusive style
- Ability to work with a high degree of independent judgment
- Proven skills in leading and motivating teams with a track record of building healthy and positive workplace environments that strengthen organizational capacity
- Excellent negotiation, problem solving and conflict management skills






- Able to think strategically to address large, complex issues as they unfold
- Advanced skills, knowledge and understanding of professional service delivery, government services, strategic thinking, systems thinking, change management, organizational development and project management
- Demonstrated written and verbal skills in presenting information and options to elected officials, senior leaders, media, and the public

Conditions of employment & work environment:

- Up to: 1 Permanent, Full-time position
- Hours of work: 36.9 hours per week, Monday - Friday. This position may be eligible for the Hybrid Work Program.
- Able to travel within the greater Edmonton region, often with little notice
- Able to be available after hours, often with little notice
- Salary Range: $89,766.30 - $128,237.58 (Annually)






- Hire is dependent upon a Police Information Check including Vulnerable Sector check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton
- Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent). Must arrange own transportation to be reimbursed in accordance with City of Edmonton policy. This may require business auto insurance
