Indigenous Support Worker - Extra Curricular

Status: Full Time, Temporary until June 2025 with the possibility of extension or becoming permanent
Pay Grid: Professional = $38,038 - $53,599 annually
Reporting to: Indigenous Advocate Supervisor
Summary of Duties:
The Indigenous Support Worker – the goal is to provide support outside of classes; advocacy between students, staff, teachers and admin. Creating more connections for sense of belonging; land-based sharing, connection to athletics, culture and language.
The team is to increase the knowledge of local culture and history among Indigenous students in the public schools. While this position is employed by the Ts̓zil Learning Centre, the work is in School District no. 48(SD48) in Pemberton.
Key Deliverables and Expectations:
- Be a positive role model and student advocate
- Exploring student interests beyond the classroom
- Finding ways to create positive connections to education
- Accountable for self, students, and teachings
- Work in collaboration with the ISW team, classroom teacher, school administration
- Join students in their activities, enhancing connections and modelling the experience
- Listen to students’ school-related challenges, and when necessary, find ways to remove barriers and/or find resources
- Documentation of student incidents in tandem with the SD48 representative
- Report to Supervisor of events breaching safety, policy and/or protocols
- Other job-related duties within scope of role as presented by both Nation and SD48
- Targeted students: Indigenous Students
- Act in the strictest confidentiality and professional manner always,
including outside regular working hours
- Perform other related duties as requested
Experience and Attributes:
- One-year related experience with local cultural knowledge
- Preferable grade 12 graduate and or other certification
- Work collaboratively and cooperatively with school administrators, teachers, and staff
- Motivated self-starter, good time management and strong interpersonal skills
- Demonstrated experience in working successfully with Indigenous students, and community
- Good written and verbal communication skills in the English language
- Ability to follow through with assignments, manage multiple tasks simultaneously and maintain confidentiality
- Highly professional in all aspects of business, presentation and interaction with students, parents, co-workers, and community members
- Successful Criminal Record Check (Vulnerable Sector)
