Clinical Coordinator, Master of Physical Therapy (MPT) Program

Primary Purpose and Nature of the Work: The Clinical Coordinator (Saskatoon) reports directly to the Academic Lead Clinical Education and Community Affairs (ALCECA) of the School of Rehabilitation Science, and works closely with the Clinical Coordinator (Regina) to develop and administer all aspects of the Physical Therapy clinical education program. The Clinical Coordinator (Saskatoon) works with a range of individuals in the University and community at large, which includes the professional clinical health care delivery sector and other community partners.





In addition to being knowledgeable in the area of Physical Therapy practice and basic clinical education processes in Physical Therapy, the individual requires excellent communication, relationship building and negotiation skills. In the absence of the ALCECA, the Clinical Coordinators (Saskatoon & Regina) jointly take on the responsibilities of the ALCECA.

Typical Duties or Accountabilities:

MPT Clinical Education Administration

- Determine availability of clinical placements within Saskatchewan
- Collaborate with provincial clinical facilities to identify placement options
- Arrange, organize and ensure an appropriate mix of clinical placement experience for each student in the physical therapy program
- Evaluate individual practice settings to determine their ability to provide high quality placements
- Collaborate with clinical partners and other national physical therapy academic clinical coordinators in determining availability of clinical placements, provincially and nationally
- Administer out of province clinical education placement requests, including affiliation agreements,





specific requirements and prerequisites for placements
- Prepare clinical placement schedules and clinical placement information for physical therapy students and clinical facilities
- Prepare information document for each facility regarding the School's policy and procedures, clinical course objectives, evaluation forms, and the student's academic background, for posting on SRS Website
- Collaborate to ensure that policies and procedures related to clinical education are consistently applied and enforced
- Collaborate to review physical therapy student clinical performance evaluations and preparation of final grade reports
- Support new clinical education pilot projects that promote high quality, innovative clinical education experiences for students






- Monitor the participation of clinical facilities in the clinical education program on an ongoing basis.
- Participate in components of clinical education teaching within the MPT
- Promote the use of Information Technology (IT) resources for facilities and clinical instructors and contribute to clinical education content development for IT mechanisms of delivery (e.g. online clinical performance instrument, clinical practice course materials, videoconference workshops/seminars and meetings)
- Undertake regular communication with faculty, staff, and key stakeholders including health region administrators responsible for clinical education programming.
- Promote the University of Saskatchewan, the School of Rehabilitation,





the Master of Physical Therapy Program to the external environment where appropriate

Resource Materials and Reports

- Develop, update and distribute clinical education resource materials for students and clinical instructors.
- Update Clinical Education Policies and Procedures in collaboration with ALCECA
- Prepare clinical education reports for internal purposes including: program accreditation, strategic planning, School of Rehabilitation Science meetings, etc.
- Respond to external requests for information regarding clinical courses including: the U of S President’s office, provincial student loan program, etc.
- Participate in Master of Physical Therapy (MPT) program planning, review and evaluation
- Other duties as determined by the ALCECA and/or SRS Director

Communication







- Interview and counsel students regarding clinical education placements
- Develop and deliver clinical education workshops (including orientation) for students and clinical instructors
- Communicate with clinical instructors and students regarding clinical placement performance issues
- Maintain clinical education files/student records
- Evaluate the clinical education program through various mechanisms including communication with clinical instructors/administrators and students
- Ensure appropriate clinical agreements are established with facilities/programs and that University/School policies and procedures are communicated
- Participate in the planning, development, promotion and implementation of continuing education workshops






- Produce continuing education resources related to clinical education models and methods

Committees

- Represent the MPT Program &/or SRS on relevant University working groups/committees:
- Clinical Education Advisory Committee (Member)
- Clinical Practice Courses Sub-committee (Member)
- National Association for Clinical Education in Physical Therapy (Member)
- School of Rehabilitation Science Faculty Council (Member)

Academic Involvement

- Participate in components of clinical education teaching within the MPT program
- Engage in ongoing evaluation and development of clinical education courses
- Support Interprofessional Education (IPE) initiatives in collaboration with faculty and staff from other education Programs

Education:





Entry-to-practice professional degree in Physical Therapy

Licenses:

- Current full practicing license as a physical therapist with professional liability insurance
- Member in good standing with a provincial Physical Therapy regulatory body
- Member of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association (CPA)

Experience:

- Minimum 5 years of experience as a registered Physical Therapist
- Previous experience as a Physical Therapy preceptor/clinical instructor
- Teaching experience in a Physical Therapy education program and/or academic leadership related to clinical education and/or post-professional qualifications, relevant training and/or a graduate degree are considered assets

Skills:

- Comprehensive foundation in physical therapy practice






- Competency in adult education theory and evaluation
- Effective communication, organizational, interpersonal, problem-solving, and counseling skills
- Current knowledge and skill in the use of information and computer technology (e.g. word processing, spreadsheets, database management, communication programs, etc.)
- Knowledge of legislative, regulatory, legal, and practice issues affecting clinical education, students, and the profession of physical therapy
- Ability to work independently and to coordinate work with colleagues and peers
- Ability to travel, as required

Status: Term 12 months with the possibility of extension or becoming permanent

Salary: The salary range, based on 1.0 FTE, is $67,681.00 - 105,753.00 per annum. The starting salary will be commensurate with education and experience.
