Cad Rail has other facilities in Calgary, Lethbridge (under Caltrax banner)





and has recently been selected by the ONxpress Transportation Partners association to provide all legacy fleet maintenance services for the Metrolinx rail fleet of approximately 1000 bi-level coaches and 90 locomotives. Cad rail’s delivery team will operate and maintain Metrolinx’s rail maintenance facilities in Etobicoke and Whitby, as well as in multiple overnight and midday light servicing facilities located across the Metrolinx train service area.

Job Summary:

The Electronics Lab Technician will be responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining electronic, electrical, and electro-mechanical rail-based devices. This includes board-level repairs, system-level troubleshooting, and working closely with the Maintenance and Engineering teams to support ongoing operations. The role also involves performing post-failure analysis, ensuring high-quality standards for incoming parts, and acting as a subject matter expert (SME) on various electronic rail systems such as CCTV, 'Black Box' recorders, and door systems.

Key Responsibilities:

Repair and Troubleshooting:

- Conduct board-level repairs on electronic, electrical, and electro-mechanical rail-based devices (e.g., controllers, computers).






- Read and interpret circuit diagrams to troubleshoot faults at both board and system levels.
- Perform post-failure analysis on rail parts to confirm faults and determine whether repairs should be carried out in-house or by the OEM.
- Develop internal testing routines for new rail equipment using appropriate hardware and software.

Quality Assurance:

- Conduct QA checks on incoming parts and repaired components to ensure they meet strict quality standards.
- Clean and inspect repaired parts, ensuring all components are in proper working order before reinstallation.

Subject Matter Expertise (SME):

- Become an SME in various rail vehicle electronic systems, including CCTV, ‘Black Box’ recorders, electrical switches, and door systems.






- Represent the company as an SME in calls and meetings with the Customer and Rail Operator.

Collaboration and Support:

- Work with the Maintenance and Engineering teams to support investigations, rollouts, and day-to-day maintenance activities.
- Provide technical expertise to support ongoing operations of rail fleets, including GO Transit/UP Express systems.
- Collaborate with OEM representatives to acquire detailed product information for in-house repairs and analysis.

Specialized Skills:

- Solder and de-solder at the board level, diagnosing, replacing, and testing faulty components to ensure they meet OEM specifications.
- Reverse engineer and manufacture power, data, and communication cables.
- Perform ad-hoc repairs on various industrial electrical, electronic, and electro-mechanical parts as needed.






- Understand the use of various troubleshooting and diagnostic equipment such as volt meters, gauges, oscilloscopes, micrometers, and other related equipment.

Software and Hardware:

- Apply software and hardware updates to devices as required.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of Microsoft Office suite for documentation and reporting purposes.

Communication:

- Communicate effectively with management, internal teams, and external stakeholders (including the Customer) in both verbal and written formats.
- Write repair reports and diagnostic summaries

Qualifications:

- Knowledge of rail vehicle systems such as CCTV, 'Black Box' recorders, and door systems.
- Proven experience with the use of equipment and tools necessary to diagnose board-level repair,





including soldering and de-soldering techniques.
- Diploma or Degree in Electronics Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
- Certifications in electronics repair or related technical fields are an asset.
- 3 to 5 years’ experience working with rail, marine, or aviation electrical systems.
- Strong understanding of passive and active electronic components.
- Ability to reverse engineer electrical and communication systems.
- Familiarity with industrial/rail/marine/aviation computing and electrical systems.
- Proficient in reading circuit diagrams and troubleshooting electrical systems.
- Competent with Microsoft Office suite of applications.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work with OEM representatives and external clients.






- Lab-based role with occasional fieldwork, as needed, to support rail operations.
- Collaborates with cross-functional teams including Maintenance, Engineering, and Quality Assurance.
