Description

The Olympic Oval in the Faculty of Kinesiology is currently seeking a Recurring Part-time Facility Operations Support.

The Olympic Oval is the premier Winter Olympic legacy facility from the 1988 Winter Olympic Games as part of the University of Calgary's Faculty of Kinesiology. The facility provides programs and services for a number of local, national, and international stakeholders and is home to high performance athletes, world-class high performance programs, and excellent research. The Oval provides a dynamic environment for Faculty of Kinesiology programs including Dino Athletics, Active Living, and various Faculty courses and research initiatives.





The Olympic Oval brings international recognition to the University of Calgary through the hosting of major international world class events, the training of Olympic athletes, and ongoing development of high performance programs. Additionally, the Olympic Oval is recognized locally as a major part of the Calgary community providing public skating, events and bookable spaces for various public user groups and entities.

The Facility Operation Support reports to the Olympic Oval's Maintenance Supervisor. The work requires a high level of physical demand in maintaining the facilities. This position requires the ability to think and react quickly in emergency situations, and at times can be a highly stressful position. During peak competition season (October-March), volume of work increases substantially. Emphasis is placed on building mechanical operation, maintaining and operating mechanical systems. The position requires independent decision making that can have a significant impact on the facility,





ensuring that events and programs operate co-operatively and efficiently.

This is a Recurring Part time, AUPE position with a variable work schedule, including evening and weekend hours, and possible overtime.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

- Ensures that ice surfaces are maintained in world-class condition, paying particular attention to quality and thickness, as outlined in standards.
- Ensure log books for the equipment are up-to-date and all staff are made aware of any mechanical issues and if there are any out of service.
- Expected to be in attendance for ice making, maintenance, and ice related events throughout the season.
- Responsible for maintaining an effective feedback system to continuously monitor the ice conditions for different user groups.






- Organize and maintain a set of tools for use on mechanical systems, the tool chest and work shop cage.
- Responsible for Artificial ice plant PMs and log sheets.
- Communicates with the Operations team and other Oval staff any requirements needing to be followed to maintain the high quality product expected.
- Responsible for the safe and proper use of all equipment and tools, including, but not limited to ice resurfacers, forklifts, edgers.
- Pleasantly and respectfully interacts with co-workers, clients, supervisors, coaches and athletes.
- Provides input to the operations team regarding changes to promote continuity throughout the team.






- Seeks and receives feedback from high performance athletes and coaches continually to stay current to existing and future conditions and needs.
- Attends all relevant meetings as outlined by the supervisor.
- Responsible to administer first aid as necessary and to carry out emergency procedures, according to policies set out by Risk Management, to ensure safety for all users.
- Responsible for training part time staff on safe care of equipment.
- Ensures that all duties assigned are carried out in a timely manner, according to set schedules and task timelines.
- Responsible for opening of the facility according to building hours, interacting with users to facilitate smooth operation.
- Keeps supervisor informed of any deficiencies, issues, changing equipment / building conditions, and other information to maintain a safe and user-friendly building.






- Keeps current with respect to changing safety practices and requirements in ice and building operation as legislated.
- Works in a mentorship role with part time employees, to provide help and ongoing instruction on all protocols and procedures, thus promoting a positive team environment.
- Ensures regular work attendance and punctuality for start and finish of shifts.
- Personal appearance and grooming must reflect the World Class environment of the Olympic Oval.
- Takes responsibility for own learning and continued professional growth. Establishes goals and objectives.

Qualifications / Requirements:

- Recreation Facility Management degree,





building operators certificate or significant experience working with artificial ice plant and recreation facilities is required.
- Current recognized certification in artificial ice plant operation and theory, would be an asset.
- Current First Aid, CPR, AED, Transportation of dangerous goods and WHMIS certification is required.
- Basic understanding of arena operations, facility operations and mechanical aptitude is a necessity.
- Must be able to interact effectively with varying personalities, languages, cultures and attitudes to receive and analyze feedback.
- Previous experience operating ice resurfacers, forklifts, ice edgers, scrubbers, and other ice related equipment is preferred.
- Experience operating and providing basic troubleshooting of house sound systems and portable sound systems is preferred.






- Must be able to perform heavy lifting, and manual labour.
- Candidates with 500 hours experience in high performance ice facilities and experience in event set up and competitions would be preferred.
- Training in Apogee building automation is an asset.
- Forklift and manlift certification is preferred.
