Full job description

BCIT’s Information Technology Services is seeking a regular, full-time (1.0 FTE) Director, Cloud Technology & Infrastructure Services. This position Provides strategic direction to the Cloud Technology & Infrastructure Services function. Leads modernization and delivery of cloud technology, network and cloud administration, data centre and infrastructure services. Oversees development of infrastructure roadmaps, end-to-end lifecycle of projects,





and ensuring availability and capacity management for current and future technology needs. Acts as a strategic advisor to the Associate Vice President and Chief Information Officer (AVP & CIO) and collaborates with ITS management team to ensure ITS responsibilities, strategies, goals and projects are realized. Develops understanding of Institute’s environment and establishes strategic alliance with senior leaders, schools, and departments. Assesses ministry mandate(s) and capital renewal needs to develop plans with partners and builds consensus to transform Cloud Technology and Infrastructure Services.
Functionally reports to the AVP & CIO, with direction and oversight from the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) on matters related to cyber security.

Duties & Responsibilities

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

- Participates as a member of the AVP & CIO’s leadership team,





providing input to development of ITS vision, technical roadmaps, and broad over-arching strategies and sharing responsibility for achievements and success.
- Acts as a strategic advisor to the AVP & CIO and collaborates with CISO, ITS management team to ensure ITS responsibilities, strategies, goals and projects are realized. Delivers reports, presentations and business cases on technology vision and transformation, challenges, initiatives, and achievements.
- Develops strategies, plans and policies to drive out initiatives that support achievement of IT infrastructure goals. Establishes the necessary technical standards, processes, and metrics to optimize areas of physical infrastructure, network operations,





cloud services to enable a digitally enabled Institute.
- Provides strategic direction to technology infrastructure and network management, including development of infrastructure roadmap, overseeing end-to-end lifecycle of projects, and ensuring availability and capacity management for current and future needs. Translates strategies and roadmap into non-complex language and articulates to key partners.
- Modernizes and maintains core technology such as unified communications (voice, data, video), hosting data centres, high speed connectivity of network systems, servers, and storage to deliver best experience to students and staff. Oversees ongoing maintenance, improvement, and changes to services; recommends retirement of services where needed.






- Leads the development of cloud-based tools and technology to enhance the IT infrastructure experience across BCIT. Guides the team to design, deploy and maintain cloud-based services and processes that enhance service delivery capabilities and align to ITS vision and strategy.
- Develops understanding of Institute’s environment and establishes strategic alliance with senior leaders, schools, and departments. Works with cross functional teams to understand their business needs and mandate and builds consensus to transform Cloud Technology and Infrastructure Services.
- Develops enterprise architectural descriptions, translating business requirements into high-level solution design. Identify opportunities for innovation to address technology debt and cost optimization.






- Collaborates with sector peers, BCNET, vendors, and technology providers. Oversees vendor selection process on installation, maintenance and improvement of Infrastructure and Cloud services. Monitors vendor performance, contract compliance and risk mitigation.
- Establishes service level expectations (SLEs) and key operational metrics to effectively manage services and projects, including relationships with vendor and service providers and engaging clients to deliver on current and future needs. Develops escalation workflow for teams and clients.
- Directs the performance of the team to meet service level commitments and standards. Manages the operating budget for all projects, ensuring optimal usage of both technical and functional resources.






- Takes direction from IT Cyber Security Office to ensure implementation of necessary monitoring capability and remediation of activities that would identify occurrence of a security event.
- Manages directly and indirectly reporting staff, overseeing, and participating in selection, coaching, mentoring, development, performance management and all other people-management practices. Promotes an environment of growth by working with staff to create learning plans, identifying training and development opportunities and ensuring the team receives the support they require to grow.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:







- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, business administration or other related field (Master’s preferred).
- Minimum 10 years’ experience in IT and business/industry at progressive levels of responsibility, involving leadership, management of cross-functional teams, and influencing senior level management and key partners.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Expert knowledge of the concepts, theories, practices and techniques of IT infrastructure planning, systems integration, architecture, technology operations, and system lifecycle management.
- Broad knowledge of current and emerging technologies,





technology directions and strategic application to business needs; includes familiarity with traditional IT practices, as well as emerging methods such as SecOps.
- Advanced business acumen and planning skills, with ability to establish processes and manage achievements against key metrics.
- Strong skills in budget planning, financial management and resource management.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to explain technology solutions in business terms, establish rapport and persuade others.
- Strong leadership skills and ability to manage a cross-functional team of reporting leaders and specialists; ability to communicate a vision that inspires and motivates staff.
