Job Title: Laboratory Assistant
Status: Temporary Part Time (12 Month Contract)

Days: 8 Hour Shifts (Subject to Change)

Wage Schedule: $32.590 - $37.260 per hour

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the direction of the Supervisor, the Laboratory Assistant is responsible for performing duties within their scope of practice including:
1. Ordering, accessioning, receiving and preparing specimens for histological and cytological analysis;
2. Data entry;
3. Quality control, operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment;
4. Filing of blocks and slides;
5. Discarding of wet tissue;
6.
Temperature monitoring;
7. Preparing of reagents;
8. Preparing specimens for send-out to reference laboratories;
9. Ensuring the cleanliness of equipment in the immediate work area;
10. Participating in a student training program, as required;
11. Maintaining a professional appearance and representing the laboratory in a professional manner;
12. Immediately reporting any unusual incidents which occur in the performance of duties;
13. Following established safety and infection control procedures;
14. Performing other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Medical Laboratory Assistant certificate from a recognized training facility (in good standing); OSMT(MLPAO) or CSMLS Certification required;
2. Proven previous Laboratory Assistant experience in a Histology/Cytology medical laboratory preferred;
3. Proven good organizational, prioritization and time-management skills;
4. Effective communication and interpersonal skills with the promotion of good public relations;
5.
Able to work effectively in a busy environment with frequent interruptions and maintain effective work relationships in a team-based environment;
6. Strong computer keyboarding skills;
7. Knowledge of infection control principles and practices;
8. Knowledge of WHMIS;
9. Must be physically able to perform duties of lifting, bending, sitting, walking and prolonged standing;

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
The terms and conditions of employment are in accordance with the Collective Agreement between the Hospital and OPSEU Local 348.
