Position Overview: Join a progressive, city-building team and play a vital role in keeping children safe on their way to school.

You will provide leadership to approximately 80 Crossing Guards.

You will foster a safe and respectful workplace culture, including advancing health and safety issues.

You will maintain daily schedules, manage a budget and complete other administrative aspect of the program.

You will study, analyze and make recommendations for new crossing guard locations, and related pedestrian, cycling and traffic safety for school travel purposes.

Responsibilities: The Supervisor, Crossing Guards provides leadership to a robust crossing guard program that supports safe, healthy and sustainable trips to school for elementary-aged children.

Supervises the work of over 80 part-time Crossing Guards,





with full responsibility for interviewing and selection, orientation and training, assigning and monitoring work, and performance management up to and including recommending termination.

Provides direction and recommendations to staff on health and safety issues.

Prepares annual and daily schedules for approximately 72 locations.

Processes timesheets for payroll purposes and oversees an Operating Budget for the program.

Conducts or participates in traffic control device planning and recommendations to schools, parent councils, school boards and Council.

Addresses complaints from schools, residents, parent councils, and school boards regarding on-site and neighbouring roadway traffic issues affecting children bussed, walked,





cycled or driven to school.

Responds to requests for permanent Crossing Guard location assignment installations.

Conducts or assigns field studies as appropriate.

Prepares and presents reports to Committee, Council, school boards, and parents with recommendations (e.g., installation of Crossing Guard, school bus loading zones, no stopping zones, etc.)
Serves as a backfill crossing guard, as required.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements: 2 year diploma or 2-year specialized post-secondary program.

Minimum of 2-4 years related experience in Transportation or a related field.

Ability to plan, assign, train, inspect, evaluate, and supervise a large group of employees.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills,





with an ability to connect with a wide variety of people.

Effective organizational skills, with ability to manage multiple schedules, inquiries and competing priorities
Knowledge of traffic regulations and principles, traffic control devices, and road design pertaining to school and pedestrian crossings
Ability to investigate and respond to school travel complaints, up to and including conducting transportation studies and preparing recommendations to City Council
Skilled in the use of computer software programs such as Microsoft Office Suite, payroll administration programs and scheduling tools.

Must have a valid Class G driver’s license in good standing.

Reliable with a good attitude and employment record.
