POSITION FUNCTION
Regulate and enforce the electrical code, acts, associated codes,





standards and by-laws through the review of technical plans and documents, on-site inspections and the approving of permits.

KEY DUTIES
Review permit applications, plans and specifications for compliance with electrical codes and regulations; provide technical assistance and interpretation to advise applicants, contractors and professionals on required design changes; issue electrical permits.

Conduct site inspections during all phases of industrial, commercial and residential installation to ensure that materials used are certified and that electrical work performed complies with applicable codes and regulations; test electrical components including fire alarm and emergency systems; issue certificates of inspection noting acceptance or deficiencies; approve occupancy certificates for completed building permits.

Prepare and maintain manual and computerized records related to electrical and service details and inspections; investigate and write reports regarding fires,





accidents and equipment failures of suspected electrical origin.

Respond to enquiries and complaints from the public, outside agencies and other departments regarding regulations and bylaws, suspected unsafe conditions or installations, zoning, planning and street lighting issues; conduct follow-up on complaints; prepare correspondence as necessary; provide information to City Solicitor and City Manager regarding statutory requirements related to permits and inspections.

Perform related duties where qualified.

INDEPENDENCE
Work is generated by electrical permit and construction activities and statutory requirements.
Work is reviewed through reports to supervisor.
Issues regarding disputes, policy and procedures are referred to the supervisor

WORKING CONDITIONS
Physical Effort:






Climb ladders, stairs and scaffolding. (occasional)
Work in awkward spaces such as attics and crawl spaces. (rare)
Mental Effort:
Deal with complaints and negative comments. (occasional)
Visual/Auditory Effort:
Focus on detailed drawings and specifications for short periods. (occasional)
Work Environment:
Office.
Work outside in all weather conditions. (often)
Work on construction sites. (often)
Work in an environment where protective measures must be taken to avoid exposure to electrical hazards, dust, fumes and asbestos. (rare)

KEY SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Organize and prioritize work.
Understand and apply principles of electrical design.
Read and interpret technical reports, plans, codes,





referenced standards and regulations.
Maintain accurate records.
Deal with applicants and consultants using tact and diplomacy.
Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

QUALIFICATIONS
Formal Education, Training and Occupational Certification:
High school graduation.
Current and valid B.C. Certificate of Trades Qualification in electrical trades. (4 years)
Current and valid Class 5 B.C. Driver's Licence.
Experience:
5 years of related experience including experience with high voltage and high energy low voltage systems.
or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

OTHER:
Must obtain B.C. Certification as an Electrical Inspector within 6 months.
Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of the trade.
