Full job description
About us
Animal Medical Hospital is a small animal veterinary hospital caring for dogs and cats on the North Shore. There is also an outpatient clinic located on Georgia Street near Stanley Park, but initially the bulk of your time will be spent in West Vancouver, just off the ocean.
We are seeking receptionist/tech assistants, the life-blood of the veterinary practice, to help us serve our clients and patients.
We have a small team of dedicated staff and veterinarians who like to operate in a low-drama, respectful environment. Our clients are similarly low-drama, as a rule, and love their pets.
We like to empower our staff, so provide training and continuing education appropriate to the position.
The Job
Our receptionist/tech assistants are expected to answer the phone, obviously, but also be skilled, with time and training, with other methods of client communication such as email and proprietary reminder and fillable form systems. A pleasant manner with the public in both verbal and written communication is important.
Computer skills should be solid. You don't need to be an Excel spreadsheet ninja or anything, but our medical records and internal communications are all PC-based, so knowing how to navigate a computer will make training a lot easier for you. Additionally they will be trained to assist our animal health technicians including surgery prep and patient monitoring.
Organization skills are also key.
You will need to learn to evaluate the time needed for various appointment types, and how to work different appointments into the schedule in a rational manner, how to work with others in completing task lists on a daily basis, and keep track of outstanding and completed tasks.
Receptionist/assistants also review medications with owners, help to dispense medications, review home care with clients, make entries into practice management software, and handle financial transactions.
YOU WILL NOT BE BORED. This is not a "sit around" job - we are busy, and the learning curve is steep! But if you are the person who is interested in animals and how they operate, and helping us make them feel better, it will be rewarding work for you. You will also not be clean all the time. There's a reason we all wear scrubs,
after all!
Things you may already have that will help you perform this job well:
- A basic course in medical terminology (a VOA certificate will put you toward the head of the pack)
- Previous experience is a bonus
- Previous animal handling experience (dog training, cat wrangling, working at a boarding kennel, grooming, bathing) is a great
- An interest in science/biology/medicine, even with no specific training
- A love of wearing comfy scrubs all day
- A good sense of humor, because animals are just crazy sometimes
If you've got none of this, but think you'd like to work in a rewarding job, apply and talk to us.
